Dear Highlands Summer Festival Patron:

Over the past year there have been changes to the Highlands Summer Festival. After eight years as an independent entity, the shareholders voted to become a not-for-profit, charitable organization. The change was completed in February 2008.

This new status will affect the company’s ability to fund-raise. As a charity (Canada Revenue Agency registration number 87185 7918 RR0001) the Festival will be able to issue tax receipts for donations. In addition, supporters who donate $50 or more will become members of the Highlands Summer Festival, entitling them to attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting. The governance of the Festival is now overseen by a seven member Board of Directors who donate their time and expertise to ensure the continuing viability of this important cultural facet of the community. Members of the Board include: Jack Brezina, President; Tammy Rea, Vice President; Craig Saunders, Secretary; Rob Eaton Treasurer; and Directors, Joan Chapple, Paul Heffer and Julie Van Lieshout.

In the past, the Festival has solicited donations from patrons through an arms-length body called Friends of the Highlands Summer Festival. The responsibility for soliciting and managing the donations now rests with the board. The name Friends of the Highlands Summer Festival will continue. Patrons can direct their donations to the Highlands Summer Festival or the Highlands Opera Studio. In addition to participating in the AGM, Friends, will receive recognition in the theatre program and on our website and will receive "front of line" service when placing ticket orders. All donations will be acknowledged with a receipt, which can be used for income tax purposes. Everyone who makes a donation will also have the satisfaction of helping to support one of the most dynamic summer theatre companies in Ontario. We hope this change in the company structure will not only add to the artistic presentations of the Festival, but also increase your enjoyment and involvement in this venture.

We welcome your comments and questions. Direct them to the Board of Directors at Box 938, Haliburton, ON, K0M 1S0.

Through the efforts of Friends of the Highlands Summer Festival, over $10,000 has been invested in the past to help the Highlands Summer Festival and close to $25,000 in the Highlands Opera Studio. In addition to the many contributions received from members, the organization hosted a 50/50 draw during each performance last season. The draw proved to be very popular and has added greatly to the support we can provide the Festival. Sincere thanks to all our contributors and those who purchased the 50/50 tickets.

A portion of these proceeds is invested in the infrastructure of the Northern Lights Performing Arts Pavilion, improving the facility for all users. As well, over the past few years, Friends of the Highlands Summer Festival have assisted in the purchase of a variety of lighting instruments, a theatrical "fog" machine, and a musical electronic keyboard. They have also helped the Festival cover the cost of professional directors, Opera Studio faculty, stage managers and actors.

While we appreciate donations of any amount, membership in the Highlands Summer Festival, and the privileges that are a part of it, start at $50. Donation categories are available in one of our four levels: Actor--$50; Director--$100; Producers--$250; Corporate--$750.

If you would like to become a Friend of the Highlands Summer Festival, please send you donation to, Friends of Highlands Summer Festival, Box 938, Haliburton, ON, K0M 1S0 or return it with your ticket order. Your contribution will help ensure the continued growth of the Highlands Summer Festival and the Highlands Opera Studio.

We hope you will enjoy this year’s season of Highlands Summer Festival and Highlands Opera Studio. We look forward to your ongoing support.Yours truly,

Jack Brezina,

President,

Board of Directors
